President’s Message:

            As I contemplated the new year and my assuming the office of division president (not sure if the term elected is appropriate there), I thought of my first words when Sean Moore asked me if I would be willing to run for president: “I guess it’s my turn.”  Since, I’ve given it more thought.

During the past year the division has made some substantial strides in bringing the message of the AOH, particularly awareness of our division’s presence, to more people in Southeastern Connecticut.  The most prominent addition is the creation of our new website whose address now appears boldly at the beginning of each newsletter.  Many thanks and much gratitude is directed toward our division webmaster, Jeff Watterson, who single-handedly created it.  As a newer member in the division, he took it upon himself to recreate the website (which had fallen into disuse), design its content, and consistently update the information found in it.  Please visit the site if you have not done so recently.  And, more importantly, pass the address along to others who might be interested in the organization or Irish matters in general.  The monthly newsletters included in it can be used to direct attention to our upcoming activities.

            In that vein, we have begun to expand our presence in places not found in recent memory.  The thanks here go mainly to outgoing president and current VP Jim Gallagher.  Jim has formed connections to local institutions like the New London Library and the New London Maritime Museum as well as the Irish-American club in Westerly, RI, an organization with many of the same goals as ours.  He will also be making a presentation at Connecticut College this March in conjunction with Irish heritage month activities.  On another front, we have representation on the New London St. Patrick’s Day Parade committee which allows us to influence the structure and spirit that this fledgling parade will take.  Also, I have recently been invited to discuss our possible inclusion in the Groton Library’s Irish heritage activities planned for March.  I believe this type of visibility can grow as more of us think of ways to “get the name out” to other neighbors.  Our mission is in part, after all, the promotion of Irish culture and more importantly the guardianship of its good name.

            Finally, it is my hope that we as an organization can make strides to have a more direct influence by participating in local social efforts to meet the needs of our less advantaged or distressed neighbors.  Christian charity calls upon us to look to those needs and take steps to alleviate them.  The charities we currently contribute to are worthy of our support, but our active involvement as volunteers may be worth much more than our limited means can afford.  Therefore, as the newly elected president I ask the membership and friends of the Hibernians to join me in this effort by suggesting groups we may cooperate with and/or providing bodily support when the time comes.  I look forward to the possibilities and wish you all the very happiest of New Years.

            Respectfully yours,

            Fran DePeter

The 2011 Slate of Officers was presented at the November meeting by the Chair of the Nominating Committee, Sean Moore.  Voting was held during the December meeting.  As usual, nominations from the floor were also accepted.  The slate was accepted and voted on with the following result:

President - Fran DePeter;

Vice-President - Jim Gallagher;

Recording Secretary - Rick Connell;

Treasurer / Financial Secretary - Tom Foley Jr.;

Marshall - John Duddy;

Sentinel - Tim O'Neill.

The division thanks you, gentlemen, for your continued support and involvement.

President’s Message:

            It is my hope that you all have fared well during this spate of awful weather.  Let’s then hope that it is not an omen for the months to come, particularly the month of March.  As you read what follows, please pay particular attention to the events calendar which does not include all the local activities surrounding St. Patrick’s Day.  It seems that there are many opportunities for us as an organization to make our presence known.  At Tuesday’s meeting (the weather appears favorable and the downtown streets are cleared of snow) we will discuss our participation in those listed events as well as the New London St. Patrick’s Day Parade and the Mystic parade.  In addition, the Groton Library is offering an Irish heritage program this year.  I expect that many of you might be interested in taking that in.  Though I do not currently have the particulars, they will be forthcoming either through an email or the March newsletter.  These activities are showcases for our common background and provide avenues to reinforce the pride we take in our history.  Let’s use them as springboards to even more programs in the future.

            I also ask you to take note of the letter relating to St. Patrick’s Day cards.  Division 5 in Maryland has taken on a worthy cause and found a way to turn it into a charitable event.  Although we may have the means to imitate them, this is the type of thinking we may want to emulate in our community.  I know there are members and friends of the Hibernians who may have the very idea that would fit our division.  Please give it some thought and communicate any ideas you may have.

   In a final plea and as per our By-Laws, members who haven't paid their dues for 2009 and 2010 will be identified and a vote will be taken to consider removing their names as members.  Those of you who are in arrears but not sure to what extent can still pay the 2011 dues of $27.  Please mail your check to the address listed in the newsletter.   We must pay Per Capita dues to both the National and State AOH for all members retained in our annual report to those levels.  Tom Foley is currently compiling a list and will contact members individually.  The hope is that we can keep these members on our roll.

            Respectfully yours,

            Fran DePeter

Saint Patrick's Day Cards

Dear Friends of Saint Patrick:

For years many of us have tried to purchase Saint Patrick’s Day cards that properly reflect our patron saint’s contribution to the establishment of Christianity in Éire and honor our proud Irish heritage. Often the cards on the market belittle Saint Patrick and insult and demean our Irish Catholic faith and traditions. To the Irish people, Saint Patrick’s Day represents much more than exchanging insulting cards, getting drunk, and drinking green beer. These stereotypes undermine Irish culture.  Our John F. Kennedy AOH Division 5 is doing something about it. We made an arrangement with a publisher to sell Saint Patrick’s Day cards that reflect the true meaning of Saint Patrick and celebrate March as Irish Heritage Month. This year we are selling two packets of cards. Each packet of 10 cards contains an assortment of five different designs. These cards can be sent with Irish pride to your children, grandchildren, relatives, and friends.  Our division actively participates in Project Saint Patrick to support seminarians. For several years we have been financially assisting an Archdiocesan seminarian. He will be ordained a priest in June at the National Shrine. As a gift to our new priest, we wish to present him with a set of green Mass vestments. Inside will be the Hibernian logo so that he will remember us over the years when he celebrates Mass. So, when you purchase these cards you will help make this gift of green vestments possible. This will commemorate the Hibernians historical role during times of persecution in Ireland as they helped priests carry out their religious duties. Attached to this e-mail message is an illustrated information sheet with an order form. The cards are only $20.00 for each package of 10 cards. We will pay for the postage and handling. You can make your check payable to “AOH Division 5.”   Let us show our pride for Saint Patrick and our Irish heritage in the type of cards we mail out this year. Thank you for your help. Happy Saint Patrick’s Day to you and yours – "Beannacht Lá Fhéile Pádraig."

Sincerely,

 John E. McInerney, President

President’s Message:

This month’s newsletter will be brief but full of information detailing our March activities.  In addition to the Irish Heritage Month Cultural Series listed below, we will be participating in both the New London St. Patrick’s Day parade on the 17th and the Mystic Irish Parade on Sunday the 20th.  The New London parade begins at 3:00 pm, but those interested in marching should assemble at the municipal parking lot on Eugene O’Neill Drive nearest the Fire Department Headquarters at 2:00 pm.  On Sunday we will be meeting in the Mystic Seaport parking lot closest to the main entrance.  This parade begins at 1:00 pm, but organizers have asked us to be there by 11:30 am.  The volunteers will direct you to our particular staging area.  This can get very crowded so plan on an early start.  You may wish to go to the following websites for more information: www.nlirishparade.com or www.mysticirishparade.com. I hope to see many of you at the parades or at one or more of the cultural activities.  This is our time to highlight the Irish heritage which binds us to one another.  In advance, I wish you the very happiest St. Patrick’s Day.
